Waverly hands Wheelersburg first SOC loss, moves into first place deadlock with Pirates

SOSA Staff Report

WHEELERSBURG — There is now a tie atop the SOC girls soccer standings.

With a 4-1 victory over Wheelersburg Thursday evening, Waverly jockeyed itself into position to win at least a share of the Southern Ohio Conference title … should they win out the rest of the way.

If the Tigers are to win a share of the crown, they’ll have to beat both Northwest and Minford in the coming weeks. If it happens, it’ll be the first such occurrence in the five-year history of the program.

Going back to Thursday’s win over the Pirates, Waverly (10-3, 7-1 SOC) took a 1-0 lead when Amelia Willis connected with net, thanks to an assist from Loren Moran.

From that point on, it was all Tigers.

Zoiee Smith scored twice, Moran added a goal of her own and another assist, and Waverly polished off a road win at Wheelersburg.

“This win was very special for us. The first time we played Wheelersburg, we lost 3-2 after having scored two goals in under 12 minutes. Basically, we self-imploded,” Waverly coach Chris Murphy said. “Tonight, we did not. Our ladies remained focused and assertive the entire match. Wheelersburg is always a tough team. I want to wish them the best of luck throughout the rest of their season.”

The Pirates’ lone goal of the night came from Laney Eller in the second half. All in all, Waverly outshot the Pirates (8-1-1, 7-1 SOC) by a 16-9 margin.

Waverly is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Minford. Wheleersburg travels to Northwest the same evening.
