WAVERLY — While competing in the OHSAA Track and Field State Championships last weekend, Waverly senior Cody Remington found out his name had been entered for a chance to compete in at least one more event.

After he placed second in the state in the long jump, that “chance” has since turned into a cemented opportunity.

Remington will compete in this weekend’s OATCCC Midwest Meet of Champions at Michigan State University. Remington is one of just three jumpers, all seniors, selected from the state of Ohio to travel to East Lansing.

The Midwest Meet of Champions’ website states the event as being in existence since 1974 and one that “pits the best senior track and field athletes from Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan against each other in the only scored, inter-state all-star meet of its kind in the United States.”

“At the state meet, you had to sign up and both my coaches came back and said. ‘Yeah, we signed you up for that.’ They called me Monday and invited me,” Remington said. “It’s crazy honestly. To be invited to this and be able to represent southern Ohio, that’s huge. I’m also the first person in school history to (compete). So when they called my coaches, I was extremely excited. It’s a huge honor.”

Remington, competing for Team Ohio, has his goals set out for him.

“I just want to break 23 feet and I think I have a good shot,” Remington said. “I also want to place well so we have a chance of winning the meet.”

Remington is slated to jump at 11:30 a.m., Saturday morning.
